CalHFA ADU Grants Explained

May 17, 2022

One of the most common questions we get about home remodels is regarding ADU’s, or Accessory Dwelling Units. Accessory Dwelling Units are separate dwelling areas that are on the same land as a detached house. In recent years, ADU’s have garnered a lot of interest from homeowners and the local government. Typically, homeowners would construct these homes to either provide additional income opportunities or to house additional family members.

The CalHFA ADU Grant program provides as much as $40,000 in assistance to low-to-moderate income homeowners to build ADU’s on their property. This grant has hopes to increase the production of ADU’s to ease the affordable housing shortage in the state of CA. The California Housing Finance Agency lists ADU’s as an innovative, affordable, effective option for adding much-needed housing to the state. Almost 90% of CA municipalities have adopted ADU-friendly ordinances recently, which has helped over 240,000 ADU’s to be built.
