Keeping track of your student loan repayment progress is one of the most important things you can be doing after you finish school. Accessing your Federal student loan record from the Department of Education can be complicated but here is a step by step guide.
Step 1: Log on to studentaid.gov with your federal student aid ID (FSA ID).
* if you do not already have a FSA ID then select create an FSA ID
Step 2: enter your username and password
Step 3: enter your Social Security number, name, date of birth, challenge question answers
Step 4: submit your FSA ID
Now that you're in the site, navigate to aid summary in the top right corner and select my aid in the drop down menu.
Select DownloadMy Aid Data which will provide you with a .txt file
This is where a financial planner specializing in student loan management comes in. We will take the file and input into specialized software that analyzes the data and projects out repayment and forgiveness amounts under various plans. We can see if months towards PSLF are not credited and work to verify through the Employment Certification Form (ECF).
